History History

The band was founded in December ´94 in the town Frydlant nad Ostravici, Czech Republic. In that time we carried  the name „THE SQUARE“. Band members at that time were Dalish (guitar), Richard (vocal) and Cyril (bass, vocal). We were all beginners,  we played without drums, but we learnt how to use the instruments. After Robert (drums) joined in  in September ´95, we started to be the real band and in December ´95 we played our first live show.

In the summer of ´96 we changed our name for „GARLANDS“ according to the first Cocteau Twins album. Kozel (flute, clarinet) joined in during the autumn that year and our music gained new dimension. Our first record „For the Awaken“ (March ´97) received  surprisingly good reviews in the music press. The best award - Demo record of the month - we were awarded  in Czech rock magazine Rock & Pop (numb. 3/98). Roughly 150 cassetes were sold and the song „Vitriol“ was released on a compilation of Czech underground music in Italy.

Robert (drums) had left us  in February ´00 and Borro replaced him. With a new drumer we started to play live shows and work on new songs immediately. We beginned to record our second record "Lonely Evening" in studio in April ´01. It was almost finished in July ´01, but due to technical problems we lost it. We went to studio again in December. The record was finished in autumn ´02, but it was released DIY as late as in July ´03.

We play in the clubs and during festivals. In total we have played around 75 concerts.

In ´04 The Vitriol Crew arose. This group of friends organizes hc/punk concerts in club Sokolik
in Frydek-Mistek.

Our roots are in the legacy of old gothic, cold  wave and postpunk bands such as Siouxsie & The Banchees, Cocteau Twins, Joy Division, Fields Of The Nephilim, Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, Killing Joke, X-mal Deutschland, Swans, Corpus Delicti etc. We like punk - Misfits, The Clash, Wire, Pixies etc.
